“What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit which are God’s..” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 KJV
This is the most important step in the process of seeking to obtain your best health. It is imperative that you take this step. This step is where you seek God’s clarity and wisdom about the ways in which you are living and you commit to turn from the ways in which you are living which do not honor God. If you are harboring known sin, or are harboring unhealthy ways of living, God will not be able to bless you as fully as He can if you choose to turn from all evil ways or from any neglect of the body He has given you to care for. It is clear that our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost. If we defile our body and our minds, it makes it harder to hear God’s voice and it makes it harder for us to honor Him in our bodies. We must repent from all things that get in the way of this on a daily basis and commit to living a life that follows as closely to God’s plan as we are able to do so.
What does this mean in real life? Well, some things are obviously harmful to the body, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, illicit drugs, lots of sugar or soda, a lack of exercise, etc. It may be overwhelming when conviction falls on you, but don’t despair. Write down the ways in which God is convicting you so you can further develop a plan with your coach to tackle the things that you believe God is calling you to change. The daily process will look like this.
Each morning when you awaken, pray for God to fill you with His Holy Spirit and with this measure of the Holy Spirit, invite God to show you the things in your life that are getting in between you and Him. The things that may be harming your body, your relationship with others, and most importantly, your relationship with Him. He will show you things, sometimes a lot all at once, and sometimes one or two things at a time. Do not get overwhelmed. God has many powerful promises for us. Here are some very important ones.
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 ESV
“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Philipians 4:13 ESV
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philipians 4:6-7 ESV
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV
“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” James 1:2-4 ESV
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 ESV
“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 ESV
There are many, many more verses that can be claimed. It is essential that we ask God to fill us with His Holy Spirit daily to convict us and we repent and turn from the ways in which we are living that we know do not honor God. We then ask God to help us walk according to our conviction and whenever we are tempted we turn back to Him in prayer, in the moment and claim victory over temptation. We will slip up. We are only human. But the more we can stay in ever close contact with our Creator, the more victory we will have in our lives. Daily we need to be in worship to our Creator. If you have neglected daily prayer and worship, please repent from this now and make a commitment to meet with God daily for private time when you first wake up and before you go to bed. It doesn’t need to be elaborate, but prayer, reading the scripture, and preferably some religious music too, are essential. Reading daily devotional thoughts can be helpful too, especially if the bible is something that is new to you as these devotional books can help to shed light on the teaching in the scriptures. It is important we don’t get caught up in trying to battle against flesh and blood in our own power. We need to continually surrender to God and let Him live out the victory in our lives. We simply choose to yield to His will. We don’t fight the battle. He does.
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.” Romans 8:1-39 ESV
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:12-13 KJV
“In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the LORD, nor be weary when reproved by Him. For the LORD disciplines the one He loves, and chastises every son whom He receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom His father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.” Hebrews 12:4-12 ESV
“If my people who are called by My name humble themselves, and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV
The bible is rich in promises and instruction to live a Godly life. If we want the fullness of Christ’s power and His blessing in our lives, than we must seek to honor Him fully in our beings. Again, this is not something we do in our own power. We choose to align our wills to His, asking Him to change our minds and hearts to align with His. We ask Him to change our beings and trust that He will. We turn from our wicked ways and seek to honor Him, asking Him hour by hour to keep us as we walk in accordance with His will. We will always be learning and we will continually see how we fall short of the glory of God, but He is with us every step of every day and He will carry us through every trial that comes our way. This is lesson number one. May God bless you abundantly!
“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of His glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Chirst our LORD, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.” Jude 1:24-25 ESV
